In Dutch, the phrase “het loopt de spuigaten uit” is used when things are spiraling out of control. It originally referred to scuppers, small openings along a ship’s hull, just above deck level, allowing seawater to drain off the deck.
When even the scuppers can’t keep up… you know things have truly gone overboard.
